BAA Shodokan Kyu Grade Syllabus
8th Kyu, first red belt
More than 20 hours practice after beginning training
- unsoku (foot movements)
- koho ukemi (backward breakfall)
- yoko ukemi (side breakfall)
Three techniques from a grab to to the wrist - right to right, or left to left:
- aigamae katate dori - shomen ate, oshi taoshi, kote gaeshi
(same side regular grip - front strike, elbow push down, outer wrist twist)
7th Kyu, second red belt
More than 20 hours practice after 8th Kyu.
- tegatana dosa (hand movements)
- zenpo kaiten ukemi (forward rolling breakfall from one knee)
Three techniques from a grab to to the wrist - left to right, or right to left:
- gyakugamae katate dori - aigamae ate, hiki taoshi, tenkai kote hineri
(opposite side regular grip - same stance strike, elbow pull down, inward wrist twist with body turn)
6th Kyu, third red belt
More than 20 hours practice after 7th Kyu.
- zenpo kaiten ukemi (forward rolling breakfall from standing)
Three techniques:
- koho ryote dori - gyakugamae ate
(grasp both hands from behind - opposite stance strike)
- aigamae katate dori - waki gatame
(same side regular grip - side lock)
- hanza handachi gyakugamae ate katate dori - tenkai kote gaeshi
(opposite side regular grip, tori/defender kneeling - outer wrist twist with body turn)
5th Kyu, yellow belt
More than 40 hours practice after 6th Kyu.
suwari waza (kneeling techniques):
- shomen uchi - oshi taoshi osae
kihon waza (basic techniques):
- atemi waza (strike to one point techniques): shomen ate, aigamae ate, gyakugamae ate, gedan ate, ushiro ate
kihon no tsukuri (entering to create an opportunity):
- atemi waza - hontai no tsukuri: shomen ate, aigamae ate
kansetsu waza (uke grasps tori and stabs with tanto - tori utilises joint techniques to defend):
- tegatana jodan no tsukuri: oshi taoshi, hiki taoshi
4th Kyu, orange belt
More than 40 hours practice after 5th Kyu.
suwari waza (kneeling techniques):
- shomen uchi - oshi taoshi osae
kihon waza (basic techniques):
- hiji waza (elbow techniques): oshi taoshi, ude gaeshi, reverse waki gatame, hiki taoshi, ude hineri, waki gatame
kihon no tsukuri (entering to create an opportunity):
- atemi waza - hontai no tsukuri: gyakugamae ate, gedan ate, ushiro ate
kansetsu waza (uke grasps tori and stabs with tanto - tori utilises joint techniques to defend):
- tegatana jodan no tsukuri: kote gaeshi, tenkai kote gaeshi
3rd Kyu, green belt
More than 40 hours practice after 4th Kyu.

kihon waza (basic techniques):
- tekubi waza (wrist techniques): kote hineri, kote gaeshi, tenkai kote hineri, tenkai kote gaeshi
nage waza (throwing techniques):
- nage no kata omote waza
kihon no tsukuri (entering to create an opportunity):
- atemi waza - hontai no tsukuri: shomen ate, aigamae ate, gyakugamae ate, gedan ate, ushiro ate
kansetsu waza:
- nigiri gaeshi jodan no tsukuri (junte dori, gyakute dori)
2nd Kyu, blue belt
More than 60 hours practice after 3rd Kyu.
suwari waza (kneeling techniques):
- shomen uchi - oshi taoshi tekubi osae
kihon waza (basic techniques):
- uki waza (floating techniques): mae otoshi, sumi otoshi, hiki otoshi
nage waza (throwing techniques):
- nage no kata ura waza
kihon no tsukuri (entering to create an opportunity):
- atemi waza - shouki no tsukuri: shomen ate, aigamae ate
kansetsu waza:
- nigiri gaeshi gedan no tsukuri (junte dori, gyakute dori)
1st Kyu, brown belt
More than 60 hours practice after 2nd Kyu.
kihon-waza
- randori kihon waza (without Tantō)
- atemi-waza-no-ura: waki-gatame, oshi-taoshi, gedan-ate, aigamae-ate, tenkai-kote-hineri
- kansetsu-waza-no-ura: oshi-taoshi, tenkai-kote-hineri, kote-gaeshi, waki-gatame, tenkai-kote-gaeshi
- atemi-waza, shoki-no-tsukuri: gyakugamae-ate, gedan-ate, ushiro-ate
- jodan (junte-dori, gyakute-dori)
- gedan (Junte-dori, gyakute-dori)
- without hands
- using Tegatana
kihon-no-tsukuri must be done twice on both left and right sides. The second time the technique must be completed without stopping.
2010 BAA Dan Grade Syllabus
1st Dan
Timescale: 1 year consistent practice as 1st Kyu.
- Randori no Kata *- complete (17).
- Koryu dai San * - sections: A + B (16).
- Koryu dai Yon *- complete (25).
- Previous syllabus as required.
- Randori: a minimum of three bouts of hikitategeiko.
Requirement: One bout must demonstrate knowledge and application of kaeshi waza (5 atemi waza from the Randori no Kata as counter techniques by tanto against toshu) in tanto hikitategeiko. One bout must demonstrate the use of combination techniques by toshu against tanto. The third bout must demonstrate a knowledge and application of the 17 Randori no Kata in combination and as counter technique in the performance of toshu hikitategeiko.
2nd Dan
Timescale: 2 years consistent practice as 1st Dan.
- Koryu dai San *- sections: A + B + C + D (29).
- Goshin ho - section: Techniques from tegetana no kuzushi (8).
- Previous syllabus as required.
- Randori: a minimum of three bouts of hikitategeiko.
3rd Dan
Timescale: 3 years consistent practice as 2rd Dan.
- Koryu dai San *- complete A + B + C + D + E + F (50).
- Koryu dai Ichi - complete (24).
- Goshin ho - section: Tekubi dori 1 (5).
- Previous syllabus as required.
- Randori: a minimum of three bouts of hikitategeiko.
4th Dan
Timescale: 4 years consistent practice as 3rd Dan.
- Koryu dai ni - complete (16).
- Goshin ho - section: Datotsushu no waza - against strikes, punches and kicks (6) Tekubi dori 2 - against grips (18).
- Previous syllabus as required
- Randori: a minimum of three bouts of hikitategeiko.
Requirement: One bout must demonstrate knowledge and application of kaeshi waza (using any technique from the Randori no Kata as counter techniques by tanto against toshu) in tanto hikitategeiko. One bout must demonstrate the use of combination techniques by toshu against tanto. The third bout must demonstrate a knowledge and application of the Randori no Kata in combination and as counter technique in the performance of toshu hikitategeiko.
5th Dan
Timescale: 5 years consistent practice as 4th Dan.
- Koryu dai go - complete (23).
- Goshin ho - section: Dogi dori (10).
- Previous syllabus as required.
- Randori at the discretion of the examining panel.
6th Dan
Timescale: 6 years consistent practice as 5th Dan.
- Koryu dai roku - A + B + C (22).
- Goshin ho - section: Three methods of breaking balance using datsuryoku, tegatana & kaiten (10).
- Previous syllabus as required.
- Randori - at the discretion of the examining panel.
7th Dan
Timescale: 7 years consistent practice as 6th Dan.
- Koryu dai roku - complete A + B + C + D + E + F + G (39).
- Goshin ho - complete (57).
- Previous syllabus as required.
Reigi: Character, conduct and attitude will be considered at each level
Randori no Kata * alternatively termed Junanahon (basic 17)in the Japan Aikido Association syllabus.
Koryu dai San * alternatively termed Goshin no Kata in the Japan Aikido Association syllabus.
Koryu dai Yon * alternatively termed Nage no Kata in the Japan Aikido Association syllabus.
