 How is Tomiki Aikido Taught?

The curriculum of Tomiki Aikido is arguably the most systematic and physical education-orientated of all major schools of aikido. Its approach is progressive and designed to introduce basic skills, exercises to promote the mobility of these skills, and a level of fitness that can sustain clear actions under pressure.

Basic exercises teach the principles of breaking an opponent's balance, timing and how to exploit combinations of techniques. Particular attention is placed on developing the skills of taisabaki, or the manoeuvring of the body to both evade attack and position yourself for countering with an aikido technique. To this extent all learning is ultimately orientated towards being able to use aikido skills naturally in any circumstances.
